My Photography Motivation.
I thought it was about time I introduced myself. Whitney is my name and I love to take photos. That’s it in a nutshell.
But I also love details so here’s a little rundown on why photography gets me going.
I see it as a platform to communicate, beyond the bounds of language. I can be scrolling through Instagram and end up on some random page (as happens so often), totally frothing about the way an artist has captured a frame and yet I have no idea about the backstory because the caption is in another language. Photography pushes past this barrier. It allows people access into the way others see the world, it’s like having an international VR headset on in locations we may never get to visit. That’s the first point.
On another note, the creativity involved in photography is both subjective and personal. Whether I’m shooting a toothbrush campaign (true story) or Icelandic horses running through a field at golden hour (you bet I did), I would capture the moments different to how Joe Bloggs down the road would. Plus the images are specific to that moment. That lighting. That mood. On any other day the gallery could turn out completely different (especially with landscapes). In this industry it’s easy to compare and see that as a weakness, but I’ve recently learnt to celebrate it and embrace the fact that I have something unique to offer the world.
Finally, I am so thrilled by the way light interacts with surfaces, it’s hard to imagine not capturing it. There are so many reasons why a scene becomes interesting. The angle of light, the objects that create shadows, the little people that bring perspective. Every single day I am stopped by the beauty of light (not even kidding). In fact, I comment ‘Ahh such nice lighting’ so often, that it was even incorporated into one of my bridal shower games about truths and lies.
So there you have it. A little run down on the inner workings of Whitney Lee’s brain. I hope it makes you celebrate the uniqueness of your brain too. Everyone deserves celebration.
Bye for now, I’m gonna go make a ham sandwich.
